Kinbaku Sitting positions in Japanese

If you like Kinbaku or Shibari, you will be taking lessons or practicing with people that use the Japanese vocabulary for it. So, it is very helpful to know the Japanese words for the sitting positions. Especially, the words for the Kinbaku sitting positions in Japanese

– 正座  Seiza, pronounced “say-zah” is the position where most of the tying session begin. Where the model kneels on the floor with the legs folded under the thighs and the buttocks resting on the heels. Notice that models cannot hold this position for long periods.

– お姉さん座り o-neh-san-zuwari, pronounced “oh-neh-san-zoo-wah-ree” or 横座り yokozuwari, pronounced “yo-ko-zoo-wah-ree”. This position translates to “sideways sitting”. It is where the model is sitting with the bottom on the floor and both legs bent at the knee and turned to the same side.

– 胡坐 Agura, pronounced “ah-goo-rah” with a hard “g” sound. This position is sitting cross-legged on the floor, commonly known as the Indian style.

– 長座  chōza, pronounced “cho-zah”. This is the word for sitting with the bottom on the floor with the legs extended straight out and flat on the floor with the thighs, knees and ankles together. It means sitting long. Notice that it is not the most useful position for tying. However, it comes up in exercises to stretch.

-体育座り taiiku-zuwari, pronounced “tie-ee-koo-zoo-wah-ree”. This position is sitting on the floor with the legs in front and bent at the knees. Also, thighs together and the heels on the floor, with hands together under the knees.
-ぺたんこ座りpetanko-zuwari, which is pronounced “meh-tan-koh-zoo-wah-ree”. This position is sitting with the bottom flat on the floor with the knees bent and open and flat on the floor on either side of the body.
