Many people have questioned what to wear for Shibari or if it is necessary not to wear anything. Although there is not a dress code or special clothing for Shibari, there are clothes that are much more comfortable than others, but you can wear whatever clothes you are comfortable with or not wear clothes at all, but all this is up to you.

If you go loose, you reduce (movement)

Engaging in Rope Bondage shares similarities with practicing Yoga, as both activities require freedom of movement and may induce heat and perspiration. Just as in Yoga, where flexibility and ease of movement are essential, participants in Rope Bondage should also prioritize comfort and mobility to fully enjoy the experience.

What to wear for Shibari: are you a top or a bottom?

In a Shibari scene, there are two different roles: top and bottom. The clothing in Shibari depends on the role you are playing, and the specifications or points to take into account regarding the clothing might differ from one role to another.

For bottoms

The clothes that are good for bottoms are preferably tight clothing that won’t interfere with the rope or with the work of the rigger.

You shouldn’t wear any loose fabric, since it can buckle under the rope, which is dangerous.

Keep in mind that it is more difficult to tie on shiny fabric since it can be slippery, so matte fabric is recommended.

For tops

Most riggers prefer comfortable clothing for tying, although some riggers like to tie formal dress.

The recommendation for riggers clothing are joggers, running tops, leggings, sportswear, pijamas.

Riggers usually sweat a lot in a scene, so they should bring an extra pair of clothes for after the scene.

We usually recommend avoiding jeans that do not stretch, and anything that can affect your performance in a scene.

What are you comfortable with?

Clothing in Shibari depends on each individual, what matters is to feel comfortable and to make it comfortable for your partner. Erasmus coined the proverb “Clothes make the man,” yet in Shibari, it’s not only the clothing choice but also the deliberate absence thereof that distinguishes the adept Shibari enthusiast.
