CoCo Katsura

CoCo Katsura was born in Tokyo, Japan. She is a choreographer, installation artist, shibari workshop master, rope bondage, and fire performance and body suspension performer. Initially, Katsura started to work as a body modification performer in the underground scene in Tokyo back in the year 2000.

CoCo Katsura After the 2000s

Afterwards, CoCo Katsura moved to Berlin in 2011, where she is currently doing shibari and bondage and fire and body suspension performances on a regular basis. Importantly, she has a unique way of combining fetish elements, art, and performance hand in hand with shibari. In addition, she has performed in over 100 stages across the world in the past 10 years. For example, the main countries she has visited are Japan, Holland, Germany, England, Belgium, Finland, Greece, and France.

With her unique style —a mix of Japanese classic form of shibari and her modern gothic decadence—people know her as one of the most famous shibari female artists. Moreover, her intention towards her art is to reach other people’s hearts and thoughts by the employments of her body. Besides, one of her signatures in performance is the taste of death and natural smell. For Katsura, death is the most beautiful epic of life and combined with nature it is the perfect scenery and way to compliment a performance.

Her Collaborations

Furthermore, Katsura has collaborated with many photographers, models, riggers, and performing artists throughout her life. One of the most amazing examples was the collaboration with photographer Robert Barthlot. He is a Berlin-based photographer and art decor expert. Similarly, he has a huge passion for still life photography. This collaboration included the models Eden and Sana Sakura—and Katsura did all the rope work herself. This amazing collaboration is Kimono dolls, where models wear these beautiful clothings tied up in the most elegant and artistic ways. In brief, for CoCo Katsura, Kimono dolls represent Japan and shibari in a very special and artistic way.
