When you are preparing for a Shibari session, think of the following: what are the perfect clothes to practice this activity? What is more important: confort or style? Or what if no clothes are necessary at all?

Although there is no dresscode or special clothing for Shibari, there are clothes that are much more pleasant than others. You can wear whatever clothes you are comfortable with or not wear clothes at all, but all this is up to you.

Freedom of movement is important

Engaging in Rope Bondage shares similarities with practicing Yoga, as both activities require freedom of movement and may induce heat and perspiration. Just as in Yoga, where flexibility and ease of movement are essential, participants in Rope Bondage should also prioritize comfort and mobility to fully enjoy the experience.

What to wear for Shibari: the scene matters

Your attire should align with the context of the Shibari session. Whether it’s a public performance or a collaborative learning environment, you being confortable is as important as the Shibari session itself.

For a performance

Opt for attire that complements the aesthetic and theme of the act. Consider elegant and visually striking outfits that enhance the artistic presentation.

Flowing fabrics or minimalistic garments allow the focus to remain on the intricate rope work. 

Workshop or group session

Prioritize comfort and ease of movement. Choose flexible and breathable clothing. This will enable you to engage in the practice comfortably. 

What to wear for Shibari: are you a top or a bottom?

In a Shibari scene, there are two different roles: top and bottom. The choice of clothing may vary depending on the role you are assuming.

For bottoms

The clothes that are good for bottoms are preferably tight clothing that won’t interfere with the rope or with the work of the rigger.

You shouldn’t wear any loose fabric, since it can buckle under the rope, which is dangerous.

Keep in mind that it is more difficult to tie on shiny fabric since it can be slippery, so matte fabric is recommended.

For tops

Most riggers prefer comfortable clothing for tying, although some riggers like to tie in formal attire.

The recommendations for riggers clothing are:

• Pijamas

Riggers typically perspire heavily during a scene, necessitating an additional set of clothing afterward.
