Ropunawa
Ropunawa is a Shibari instructor living in Basel, Switzerland. He has his own and unique style of rope bondage. Actually, he combines different styles of Shibari and the influence of different Shibari masters.
Ropunawa’s rope journey began in 2008, when he encountered Shibari at a performance in Australia. His first learning was under Osada Steve’s style. That was the style more common in Switzerland at that time. However, he did limit himself to the Osada Steve’s style only. He learned from many other teachers and masters in the art of Shibari or Kinbaku.
Ropunawa believes that there is not only one way to tie. The heart of his style lies in the needs of the model, in which the riggers need to focus. Each scene and partner can be as diverse as the individuality of people themselves, so through the diversity of his style, he is able to respond to each of his or her partner’s needs and desire, where he appreciates the non-verbal connection he can create with each one of his or her partners during a scene.
Ropanawa never bounded to any particular philosophy of Shibari but created his own style with the various influences of Shibari Masters. He appreciates the different styles of Shibari and takes a little of each style in order to create his unique own style. Likewise, he really believes that safety is very important, as well as awareness of what you are doing. He believes that in order to have good non-verbal communication, trust, and confidence is a must, but for a rigger, the importance of learning how to read their partner’s bodies is indispensable, although that might be achieved once a very intimate level of understanding is reached.
