Steps in a Shibari Scene – Tying
Tying is the essence of Shibari. There are five steps in a Shibari scene – tying is the second one. As any other art, bondage requires skill and concentration.
The first requirement for a successful tying is to do the knots well. So, if, as a rigger, you still feel unsure of your ability, make sure to practice beforehand. This will help you improve your handling of rope and the precision of the tying. Choose your ropes carefully. The rope is to a rigger what plaster is to a sculptor. Make sure you handle rope as skillfully as if it were a extension of your own hands.
There are many manuals, tutorial videos, and guides available for learning the different kinds of knots and structures that you can use in Shibari. So, study carefully. Don’t jump to the next one until you dominate the one you’re studying. Moreover, plan ahead exactly which parts of your bottom’s body you’re gonna tie and how you’re going to do it. And don’t improvise. That is, at least not until you’re a resourceful, experienced rigger.
As for your bottom, make sure that they are enjoying the experience as much as you do. Pay extra attention to any detail that might indicate that something’s going wrong. Talk to your bottom and make them feel comfortable. Show them that you know exactly what you’re doing, and that they can trust you.
If you experience any difficulty, don’t get nervous. You can easily solve most problems by redoing a knot, or adjusting the tying. If you’re facing a major issue, put safety and your bottom’s well-being above any other consideration.
Do not get distracted. Shibari tying is something that demands your complete attention and skill. Above all, don’t let anything distract you until you’re finished. Afterward, on’t hesitate to take a break or drink some water, if that’s what you need.
So, don’t forget: there are several steps in a Shibari scene – tying is the first one.
