Shibari for Conservatives
You might think that Shibari in particular and Kink as a whole are matters for liberal people. After all, it is mostly the open-minded who dare to deviate from mainstream lifestyles. They are the ones who run into alternative ways of living. From this point of view, conservatives have as much to do with Shibari as chili has to do with pasta. However, there is such a thing as Shibari for conservatives. Here’s how it goes:
First of all, the power dynamic between Dom and Sub can have a, let’s say, traditional interpretation. From this perspective, the man becomes the authoritarian family provider, and the woman plays the part of the subjugated wife. Now, don’t get upset. These are roles, just as you and your partner play when introducing cosplay into your kink menu. Visualize it as a “back to the 50s” fantasy. Remember that, for a surprisingly large number of people, this was the golden age of almost everything? So, it’s understandable that they want to recreate that era, just as other people have kinks about the 60s hippies, the 70s disco dancers, and so on.
Second, from the conservative point of view, restraint is a valid practice, as long as it is the man who restrains the woman. Tying as an expression of power can be as appealing to the conservative man as it is to his liberal neighbors.
Thirdly, once we overcome the stereotypes with which each side ridicules and minimizes the other side, we realize that conservatives also fantasize. After all, desire and imagination are common to all people, regardless of their political preferences. The actual content of the fantasies will certainly differ among people with different values and convictions, but imagination and obsession belong to all of us.
So, don’t be surprised if your conservative neighbor turns out to like playing with ropes. There is such a thing as Shibari for conservatives.
