Shibari Dojo by Lucke Crocker
Shibari Dojo is a small venue in Barrie, Canada, which is dedicated to the transmission of the artistic aspects of Shibari. Shibai Dojo’s leader is martial arts researcher and Japanese rope bondage educator, Luke Crocker. Luke has been practising the art of Japanese rope bondage since October 2012, and teaching and performing on stage since May 2015.
Lucke Crocker has practised martial arts for 24 years and has been leading an academic research team on the subject. Lucke has also performed on stage for Mondeose, Morpheus Bondage Extravanganza, La Nuit des Cordes, and Club M4. His experience in martial arts, combined with the knowledge and passion towards Shibari, with the influence of Osada Steve, Kazama Ranki and Akechi Denki, developed Atemi-Ryu, which is a developing Shibari and Kinbaku system, developed by Lucke Crocker.
Atemi-Ryu is the kind of system with a menkyo (license) curriculum. This means there are several requirements to pass each level of knowledge. So, the criteria to pass through the next level includes technical competency, speed and efficiency, flow, communication, and aesthetics. Each level teaches techniques and concepts linked to those of the subsequent levels.
Shibari Dojo teaches the Atom-Ryu style, which offers four levels of difficulty. Introduction, Shoden (Beginning Teachings), Chuden (Intermediate teachings), and Okuden (Advanced teaching). You will also find private classes, performances, and workshops. In Shibari Dojo, you will be able to learn Shibari on a holistic scale, where the practice itself will include everything you need to know in shibari, from how to sit and stand while practising bondage, to how to integrate the ergonomics, psychosomatics and even meditation into the practice. Some other services available in Shibari Dojo are private classes, workshops, online courses and events around the year.
