The Future of Shibari
What is the future of Shibari? First of all, we must say that Shibari in its traditional form is not likely to disappear. Even though we live in a world which values novelty, the truth is that traditions can remain vigorous, as long as practitioners remain passionate about them. And that’s exactly the case with Shibari.
However, traditions don’t remain immutable. It is likely that Shibari will allow unconventional items, such as substitutes for rope, and BDSM tools and toys. Also, a greater importance will be given to other aspects of scenes. For example, lightning and music.
Shibari has found a home in blogs and social media. Therefore, there will be a greater emphasis on Shibari scenes which participants will sahre on the Internet. This will also lead to the production of short videos, of the kind which is so popular on social media right now.
With the restrictions of the pandemic now lifted, for the most part, it is likely that we’ll see an increasing number of live performances and shows that include Shibari. This will probably lead to a more spectacular, faster, branch of Shibari.
As for its private practice, participants will increasingly combine Shibari with other bondage and BDSM practices. Therefore, it is likely that we will soon see a mix of Shibari with role play, cosplay, and other activities.
Many people have developed stress and anxiety issues due to the pandemic. Consequently, a therapeutic branch of Shibari, focused on its relaxing power will increase in the following months.
All these innovations might not be enjoyed by all practitioners, since some of them are more jealous about the “purity” of their art. However, as we mentioned at the beginning of the article, despite the many innovations in the future of Shibari, traditional Shibari will not disappear.
